QUEENS, N.Y. – Last year in New Haven, St. John’s, ranked 18th in the nation at the time, needed an own goal in overtime to defeat the Yale men’s soccer team. It wasn’t quite that difficult in the rematch Sunday in New York, but the Red Storm, currently ranked 25th, got all they could handle from the Bulldogs. St. John’s used a goal in the 22nd minute and a late insurance goal to escape with a 2-0 victory at Belson Stadium. “St. John’s is a very high-quality, athletic team and deserves to be nationally ranked,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “I really liked the competitive response from our guys, especially in the second half.” Jack Bennett got the Red Storm on the board when he scored in the 22nd minute. That was the way it stayed until late in the second half when Walter Hines sealed it for St. John’s with a goal. Goalkeeper Bobby Thalman was strong for the Bulldogs, finishing with a season-high nine saves. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Yale had a couple of chances to tie in the early moments of the second half. Charlie Neil, who scored the game-winning goal Friday against Quinnipiac, had a shot stopped by St. John’s goalkeeper Rafael Diaz. A few minutes later, Milan Tica got off a shot that went high. “Our team is developing and getting better,” Tompkins said. “I think this game will help us become a better team. It showed us some areas we can work on and strengthen.” The Bulldogs’ next opportunity will come Friday at Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
