No. 4 UNC Beat Boston College, 1-0
The Boston College women’s soccer team lost to No. 4 North Carolina, 1-0, in front of 1,513 fans at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles dropped to 7-7-0 overall and 4-5 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels are now 12-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the ACC.
This was the 15th meeting between BC and UNC. The two teams first met in 1981 with UNC earning the victory. BC’s only victory over the Tar Heels came in the 2010 season in a 3-2 result at Fetzer Field. The last three seasons, Boston College has lost to the Tar Heels, 1-0.
“I’m not upset with the way we performed. It’s one of those games where you go into the locker room in the first half and you say, ‘We got this’,’’ said BC head coach Alison Foley. “I’m more disappointed in the results not in the effort, just because I thought we played well enough to win.’’
UNC scored in the 65th minute when Kelly McFarlane took a great pass from Crystal Dunn on the left side of the BC goalkeeper Alex Johnson (4 saves). McFarlane took a couple dribbles and placed her shot into the far corner for a 1-0 UNC lead.
It was the one mistake the BC defense made in the game.
The Eagles had some key chances in the first 45 minutes of the game. In the 12th minute Stephanie McCaffrey had a chance to get BC on the board but UNC’s goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin made the first of four saves in the half.
One of the best chances came off a BC corner kick in the 18th minute. Defender Casey Morrison’s header was high but Heaberlin was in the right spot for the save.
McKenzie Meehan had a great chance from just outside the box at the end of the first half. Meehan stole the ball from the UNC defense and had a small window to rip a left-footed shot that Heaberlin juggled a bit but snuffed out any rebound.
BC held a 5-4 shot advantage in the first half.
The second half, North Carolina carried the play through most of the half. McFarlane gave UNC the 1-0 on her first goal of the season. BC’s best chance came in the waning minutes of the game when senior Patrice Vettori had a shot from just outside the box. Minutes later, Morrison had a shot from 24 yards out on a set piece but her shot went high in the 87th minute.
North Carolina finished with a 13-9 edge in shots taken. BC had two corner kicks, while UNC had five.
Boston College will now hit the road for four consecutive road games. The Eagles open the trip on Wednesday, October 16 as the team heads to Connecticut to play at CCSU at 7 p.m.
