No. 6 Bluejays too much for 'Roos, 5-0
(Kansas City, Mo.) – The UMKC men’s soccer team made some costly first half mistakes and put themselves in a hole they couldn’t get out of, falling to the No. 6 Creighton Bluejays 5-0 on Wednesday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
CU (2-0) Senior All-American forward Ethan Finlay showed why he was the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, scoring the first two goals in the 21st and 31st minutes, both on crosses. He knocked the first one in with his head, before tallying the second on a volley that scraped past UMKC (0-2) goalkeeper David Sarabia, after being set up by a nifty free kick play.
Liam Kelly struck a shot from 20 yards out for the third goal in the 34th minute, assisted on a flick by Jose Gomez. It was Gomez’ second assist of the contest. CU out-shot UMKC 9-1 in the half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Corby played the second half for the ‘Roos, and gave up a penalty kick goal to Gomez in the 67th minute.
UMKC played stronger in the second half, even getting close to scoring on a free kick by senior midfielder Chris Markey, but it struck the crossbar.
The scoring was capped in the 76th minute on a chipped in shot by Bruno Castro on a breakaway from outside the 18-yard box, assisted by Finlay. The Bluejays took a 13-4 advantage in shots in the second period.
The Kangaroos will head to Evanston, Illinois on Monday for their first road game of the season, facing the Big 10’s Northwestern Wildcats at 2:00 p.m.
