No. 6 Skyhawks score twice in second half to beat ThunderWolves
PUEBLO, Colo. — Fabian Kling and Joey Madigan scored second half goals to lead No. 6 Fort Lewis (5-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 2-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo (1-4-1, 1-1-0) today at the Rawlings Sports Complex.
“I think we struggled with our first road game and were trying to get used to that,” said third-year FLC men’s soccer coach Oige Kennedy. “As the game went on we got better. Credit to Pueblo, they make it hard when we get up there and they’re a hard team to beat.”
Kling scored the game-winner in the 70th minute on a penalty kick after Alberto Capdepon Rodriguez was fouled in the box.
“Alberto picked up the ball on the halfway line, dribbled past a couple of guys, got into the box and was taken down,” said Kennedy.
Seven minutes later, Madigan added an insurance goal off an assist from Thomas Hoang.
“Thomas sent the ball in to Joey,” said Kennedy. “As the keeper came out, Joey just took his time and sent the ball over him.”
Fort Lewis goalkeeper Ryan Wirth, who has allowed just one goal in 450 minutes of action thus far in 2011, made four saves on the day while pitching his fourth shutout of the season.
The Skyhawks outshot CSU-Pueblo 22-8 overall, 13-4 in shots on target.
Fort Lewis begins a three-game homestand at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when they host Colorado Mesa (0-5-1, 0-2-0) at Dirks Field. The Skyhawks also face Adams State (2-2-1, 1-1-0) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and UC-Colorado Springs (3-3-0, 1-1-0) at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
