King Plays Shootout Hero Again; No. 7 Mines Earns First Final Four Berth
GOLDEN – Senior Kenzie King rose to the occasion once more and NSCAA No. 7 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer punched its ticket to the NCAA Division II semifinals on Sunday with a 4-3 shootout win over Cal State Stanislaus at CSM Soccer Stadium.
As she did in the RMAC Tournament final against then-No. 13 MSU Denver on Nov. 9 and the regional championship versus No. 23 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, King supplied the pivotal penalty kick in the fifth round after junior Jayln Yates stopped the first Warriors attempt and their second sailed wide.
Senior Kendra Bulawa, freshman Emily Garnier and sophomore Cari Smith preceded King with successful conversions.
With history battling against them, the Orediggers (16-1-6) survived a 20-5 shot disparity in regulation and 7-1 margin in the extra sessions to advance through the quarterfinals for the first time in four appearances.
The women were eliminated by Grand Valley State in 2009 and 2011 and UC San Diego in 2012. The latter two came via shootouts following nil-nil play through the 110:00 minutes.
CSUS (16-4-2) placed seven shots on frame, all saved by Yates, who increased her single-season program shutouts record to 17 with the 0-0 draw and continued at No. 7 in the Division II career archives with 40.
Smith and junior Rachael Turner combined for the team's two shots on goal.
Mines will join the men's and women's cross country teams at the NCAA Division II National Championships Fall Festival in Louisville, Kentucky on Dec. 4-6. The Orediggers meet No. 8 Rollins in the second semifinal at 6 p.m. (MST) at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on the campus of Bellarmine University.
