No. 7 UCSD Women Roll Past Regis, 5-0
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The seventh-ranked University of California San Diego women's soccer team got plenty of offense and posted a third straight shutout to drop Regis University, 5-0, in a non-conference match at Triton Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
With the comprehensive result, UC San Diego moved to 3-0. Regis, from Denver, Colo., and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), remained winless at 0-2-1. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.
For the Tritons, it was already a second 5-0 victory over the first three contests, both at home, and both featuring two goals within the first 15 minutes, and three more over the final 20.
Junior Carlsbad product Katie O'Laughlin (Pacific Ridge School), the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week, scored her fifth of 2016, with fifth-year senior co-captain Kiera Bocchinonotching a pair of goals. Two other San Diego products, Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) and Taylor Ramos(Coronado HS), rounded out the scoring late.
Senior Itzel Gonzalez needed to make only one save in goal for UCSD to post her third successive clean sheet upon taking over the permanent starter's role. Counterpart Kat Crump was credited with a pair of stops.
The Tritons held a comfortable advantage in the shot department, 22-4, with 13 of them coming over the first 45 minutes.
Bocchino began the festivities at the 11:07 mark, coolly converting her first collegiate penalty-kick attempt after O'Laughlin had drawn a foul inside the box while trying to direct a header on goal. It was Bocchino's first score of 2016, and was arguably the least eventful one in the career of someone who tends to favor the aesthetically-pleasing variety.
Just over three minutes later, O'Laughlin extended her season-opening streak to three games in a row with at least one goal. It was once again a 1-2 combination for her and strike partner Reilly, on a bit of a breakaway, as O'Laughlin fed her sophomore teammate, got it back and fired right-footed from the right side of the area, into the right side of the frame.
Despite the 2-0 halftime lead, Triton head coach Brian McManus was not overly enthusiastic about the performance, and let his side know it at the break.
The Tritons promptly left no doubt as to the victor in that second stanza. In the 71st minute, all was well again with Bocchino's goal library, as she pounced on a loose ball and sent an exquisite right-footed half-volley from the left diagonal outside the box, into the upper right corner. A thing of beauty, Crump had no chance.
Not to be outdone, Reilly went left-footed from around the same area within five minutes, likewise finding the opposite top-right shelf. Fellow sophomores Megumi Barber (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) and Summer Bales were each awarded their second assist on the year. It was a second for Reilly, the CCAA's leader in 2015.
Ramos came up with the exclamation point at 87:50, latching onto a deep pass from sophomore Danielle Nunn, expertly rounding Crump and shooting into the empty net for her first of 2016 and second of her career.
UC San Diego remains in home action and awaits a matinee top-10 showdown with No. 6 Colorado Mines this Sunday, Sept. 11. The Orediggers are the RMAC favorites, with the match pitting the top-rated sides currently in the West and South Central regions, respectively. CSM is also 3-0 following a 2-1 win at CCAA foe Cal State San Bernardino on Friday. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m.
Triton Notes: Elisa Martinez returned after missing Tuesday's match at Point Loma, with UCSD trotting out the same starting 11 as it did in the season opener ... Kiera Bocchino's two-goal brace was the third of her college career ... Fourth-year senior left back Kristen Sampietro made her season debut as a late substitute.
