No. 8 Tars Edge No. 7 Women’s Soccer 1-0 At National Semifinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The furthest postseason run in school history came to an end Thursday evening as NSCAA No. 8 Rollins defeated No. 7 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer, 1-0, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championship at Owlsey B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mora Johnson created the deciding score at 19:37 with her 15th as Rollins (20-2) produced only the seventh goal against Mines and its No. 1-ranked defense.
Johnson's carry appeared to roll over the left endline, but she continued with the play and took advantage of the slight crease created by the defense's momentary hesitation to slot a low, one-bounce look just inside the near post.
The Tars, ranked first in Division II in assists (70), second in scoring (3.24 gpg) and third in both goals (68) and points (206) entering play, held a 19-6 advantage in shots, directing 10 on frame.
The Orediggers (16-2-6) sent three of their six shots to goal, led by freshman Emily Garnier with two. Senior Kendra Bulawa recorded one.
Redshirt freshman Julia Hawn owned the team's best scoring threat in the 66th minute, streaking down the seam to a well-placed feed by junior Rachael Turner; however, the short right wing try sailed a tad wide of the far post.
Despite wet conditions throughout, sure-handed keeper Jayln Yates compiled a career-high nine saves in the full time, finishing the season 16-2-6.
The loss was just the Orediggers' third in the last 50 matches dating back to Oct. 5, 2012.
The first to win four conference tournament titles, seniors Bulawa, Nicho Cusack, Kenzie King and Maddie Woodard closed their careers as the winningest class in program archives at 70-9-13 (.831) and 45-6-5 (.848) in RMAC contests.
