North Texas Scores Four Goals In Win
DENTON, Texas - Kaylah Hunter and Kelci Slaughter both came off the bench towards the end of the first half to score goals and spark the Mean Green offense. The North Texas soccer team went on to defeat Southern Miss, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
For the second straight game, North Texas dominated all aspects in the match, holding advantages in possession, shots and corner kicks. The result was a 2-0 start in conference play with two shutouts against the top two scoring teams in the conference.
"It was important for us to come out fast and set the tone from an offensive standpoint," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "The depth throughout the team really showed today and defensively once again we were able to get the shutout from both conference games this weekend."
Hunter and Slaughter both scored their first goals of the season just minutes after subbing into the game. Hunter received a cross inside the box, settled the ball and hit a low shot into the left-hand corner of the goal in the 32nd minute.
Slaughter made it 2-0 with a hard slice from the right-hand corner of the box that found the upper corner of the goal past a diving keeper in the 43rd minute. Leah Cox had both assists.
The starters came out ready in the second half, scoring two more goals over the next seven minutes. Amber Haggerty scored her first goal at home this season off a through ball from Karla Pineda just one minute into the second period.
Rachel Holden sealed the win with her first goal since the opening week of the season.
Jackie Kerestine needed to make just four saves in goal to record her second straight shutout and seventh of the season.
"It was a complete effort from us, offensively and defensively," said Hedlund. "We needed that going onto the road for the next five games."
