Northeastern battles to 0-0 tie vs. UMass
BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern women’s soccer team posted its fifth shutout in seven games on Thursday in a 0-0 draw against UMass at Parsons Field.
Senior Paige Burnett made two saves, including a fingertip stop on Jenny Scro as time expired in regulation, to pick up her 19th career clean-sheet. Burnett was matched by UMass keeper Danielle Krisenski, who stopped six shots, including a point-blank save on senior Lahaina Zoller in the 76th minute.
Northeastern (3-2-2) outshot Massachusetts (2-3-2) by a 14-5 margin and held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Hannah Lopiccolo led all players with three shots, including a blast in the 10th minute that struck the underside of the crossbar.
Sophomore Skylar LeBlanc played a strong game at left back with several positive runs into the attacking third. In the 14th minute, LeBlanc charged forward and slipped a pretty through-ball behind the UMass defense to an onrushing Taylor Caparo, who rifled a left-footed attempt on target from 20 yards out.
LeBlanc also engineered Zoller’s chance in the 76th minute with a lofted cross from the left corner that found the foot of the senior in the crease.
Massachusetts came close to finding a winner in the 85th minute when Megan Burke pulled a shot just wide of the left post from the right side of the box. The Minutewomen then nearly won it in the closing seconds, but Burnett came to the rescue by tipping Scro’s attempt off the top of the crossbar and out of harm’s way.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday for a Boston derby matchup against the Terriers. Kickoff from Nickerson Field is set for 1 p.m.
