Northeastern clips BU on late Calderone goal
BOSTON – Senior Bianca Calderone scored off a Breeana Koemans corner kick in the 85th minute to give the Northeastern women’s soccer team a huge 1-0 victory over rival Boston University on Sunday at Nickerson Field.
The win gave Northeastern (4-2-2) its first victory over Boston University (4-3-1) since 2008 and marked the third consecutive shutout for senior keeper Paige Burnett and the Huskies defense. Burnett stopped two shots, including a point-blank denial on BU’s Erica Kosienski in the 72nd minute, to earn her 20th career shutout.
Northeastern has posted six clean-sheets in eight matches this season and has not allowed a goal in 344 minutes dating back to Sept. 3 against Boston College.
In a back-and-forth affair, the Huskies were able to step up their play when it mattered most to pull out a gutsy win over the No. 2 ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Minutes before Calderone’s winner, Northeastern showed signs that a goal was near.
Sophomore Carina Deandreis tested BU keeper Alyssa Parisi with a dipping shot from the right wing in the 83rd minute that was touched just over the bar. Less than a minute later, Parisi did well to tip sophomore Kimberly Slade’s header over the goal.
Northeastern kept its foot on the gas and produced the decisive strike at the 84:38 mark when Koemans whipped a corner into the box that found the foot of Calderone, who swept it home inside the left post from six yards out. It was Calderone’s third career goal and Koemans’ second career assist.
Defensively, the Huskies frustrated the Terriers all game long. Senior Awnalisa Walker played an outstanding 90 minutes in central defense with several key blocks and pass interceptions. Boston University was able to muster just six shot attempts in the match.
The Huskies will look to extend their three-game unbeaten streak on Friday at Dartmouth at 5 p.m.
