Northeastern falls to No. 11 SC, 4-1
COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 11 South Carolina scored three second-half goals to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock to down the Northeastern women’s soccer team, 4-1, in Friday’s season opener at Stone Stadium.
Goal Recaps
• South Carolina scored just 89 seconds into the match when Savannah McCaskill powered a header into the back of the net off a Chelsea Drennan corner kick.
• Northeastern responded less than five minutes later following a corner kick of its own. Junior Kim Slade took a feed from classmate Carina Deandreis, and picked out Taylor Caparo, who buried the Huskies’ first goal of the year from eight yards out.
• The scoreline held into the second half, when South Carolina scored three goals in a span of 21 minutes to blow the game open. Caroline Gray broke the tie at 53:21 with a blast from 20 yards out into the top left corner.
• The Gamecocks added a third goal when Raina Johnson took a pass from Drennan in the box and fired a shot over the head of NU netminder Jill Quinn at 63:05.
• South Carolina put the finishing touches on the match at 74:22 when Drennan posted her third point of the night with a goal off a cross from Simone Wark in the middle of the box.
Stat of the Night
• Caparo’s goal at 6:09 of the first half was the earliest goal to start a season for NU since Caitlin Whelan scored four minutes into the first half of a 3-2 win over Holy Cross in 2005.
