Northeastern handles Harvard 2-0
BOSTON, Mass. -- For the first time in program history, the Northeastern women's soccer team (4-1-0) defeated the Harvard Crimson (1-1-0) after going without a regulation win in five previous matches.
Northeastern knocked off Harvard on penalty kicks, following a 2-2 draw, in the 2008 NCAA tournament, but had never beaten the Crimson in a regular season game.
Sophomore Kerri Zerfoss opened the scoring in the first half and junior Hannah Rosenblatt notched the insurance marker in the second half to lock down the 2-0 decision.
The win marks the fourth shutout of the season for Northeastern in only five games. The 2017 Huskies will now try to match the program mark of six clean sheets in the opening eight games set back in 2014. Junior Nathalie Nidetchmade two saves between the pipes and was aided by strong play from freshmen Julianne Ross and Mikenna McManus.
Six different Huskies sent shots on net during the game. Zerfoss and Rosenblatt found the back of the net while freshman Chelsea Domond, junior Valentina Soares Gache, and seniors Carly Wilhelm and Hannah Lopiccolo each put a shot on target.
Goal Recaps:
- Zerfoss took a beautiful feed from Domond at the top of the box with plenty of open space. She accepted the ball in stride and hammered a shot into the cage to the left of the keeper.
- Rosenblatt buried the buffering goal in the second half off a perfect pass from junior Nicole Gorman. With the keeper coming out to challenge her, Rosenblatt fired a low shot and tucked it inside the post to double Northeastern's lead.
The Huskies gear up for a match at Boston College on Sunday with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
