Northeastern plays to 0-0 draw at Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Northeastern women's soccer team pitched its second shutout of the 2014 season in a 0-0 draw at Providence on Thursday at Ray Treacy Track.
The Huskies (1-1-1) held the Friars (0-1-2) to just one shot on goal in 110 minutes as senior Paige Burnett posted her 16th career clean-sheet. With the shutout, Burnett lowered her GAA to a sparkling 0.30 clip in 302 minutes of action. As a team, Northeastern has yet to allow a goal in regulation this season.
The Huskies were busy at the offensive end, attempting 21 shots (seven on target) and six corner kicks. Northeastern had several close calls, including a shot by sophomore Haley Sinclair that was stopped on a dive by Providence keeper Kristyn Shea late in the second half. Freshman Kayla Cappuzzo was an offensive force yet again, leading the Huskies with five shot attempts, the last of which missed just over the bar in extra time.
Thanks to a sterling performance by the Northeastern back line, Burnett did not have much to do until Courtney Maguire fired a shot on frame in the 107th minute. Providence also generated just one corner kick in the match as the Huskies were able to control the tempo for long stretches.
Northeastern returns home for its next match, a Sunday afternoon affair vs. New Hampshire at Parsons Field. Opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
