2014 Schedule | 2014 Roster | 2014 Quick Facts
BOSTON – The Northeastern men's soccer teams kicks off the 2014 season on Friday night against regional rival New Hampshire at 6 p.m. from Parsons Field. Coming off a 6-9-3 season, the Huskies are eager to start their season, return to the CAA tournament and reclaim their spot at the top of the league. Head coach Brian Ainscough, who is entering his 10th year at Northeastern, will look to captains Jacob Aduama, Simon Cox and Ambry Moss to help lead a Huskies squad that returns 17 letterwinners from a season ago.
FORWARDS:
5 returning / 3 newcomers / 2 lost
The Huskies are returning two of the top five scorers from 2013 in senior Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave and junior Devin Devoy. Fayd'Herbe de Maudave posted four points (one goal, two assists) last season while Devoy netted his lone two goals of the season against Fairfield, the first of his career.
The two strikers will be looking at teammates Christian McKenna and Robbie Schallmo for support throughout the 2014 campaign. Schallmo played in a total of 17 games, including 15 starts, last season. The Norwood, Massachusetts native had three key assists during 2013, all of which came in victories. As a freshman, McKenna saw game time in 15 games, 12 of which he started. He netted his first collegiate goal against Delaware and is looking to expand his role in the coming season. Redshirt senior Nick Goo is also expected to provide experience up front for the Huskies in 2014.
The five returning forwards will be joined by a talented crop of rookies this season in Frantzdy Pierrot, along with Ackim Mpofu and Harry Swartz, who will be looking to fight their way into NU's frontline and compete for playing time.
MIDFIELDERS:
5 returning / 3 newcomers / 3 lost
Despite losing former tri-captain Dante Marini and Laurence Braude to graduation, the Huskies retain five players looking to step up and fill the void, in addition to two new additions that will bolster Northeastern's midfield. NU will be looking to sophomore Marc Greenblatt to take the lead in the development of a strong middle line. Greenblatt played in all 18 games in his first season at Northeastern, 10 of which he started. He recorded an assist on Connor Alexander's goal at Holy Cross.
To assist Greenblatt, Wes Turner and Leo Lehto will provide significant depth in the midfield. Ainscough will to use Turner at either left or right midfield, and could also see time as a fullback. Lehto, meanwhile, will look to use his strong technical skills to crack the Northeastern lineup. Turner and Lehto will be pushing redshirt sophomores Jorge Acosta and Derek Wajda as well as sophomore Jose Moros Obregon and redshirt freshman Daniel Arvidsson in 2014.
DEFENDERS:
5 returning/ 0 newcomers/ 5 lost
Northeastern returns a strong nucleus along the backline in Cox and Moss, who have anchored the defense for the last two seasons. Cox is a two-time All-CAA First Team honoree, as well as the 2012 CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Moss has caught the attention of the league, as well, earning all-conference accolades in each of the last two seasons. The duo led a Northeastern defense that held opponents to 1.06 goals per game, and held opponents to one goal or less in 13 games last season, including six clean sheets.
The Huskies bring back redshirt junior Mike Lobben, whose season was cut short due to injury in 2013. Lobben played in 11 of last season's games and received his first point with an assist on Marini's goal against Fairfield. Vying for the remaining open spot in the Huskies' defense are Sam Marley with two games under his belt from his first season at NU, as well as redshirt freshman Harrison Balder.
GOALKEEPERS:
2 returning/ 2 newcomers/ 1 lost
Junior Dylan Faber is back and looking to retain his place as the starting goaltender for Northeastern in 2014. Last year, Faber posted a save percentage of .779, which ranked second among CAA keepers, as well as third in goals against average (0.96). He posted career highs against Elon and Duke with six saves in each match.
Aduama, a senior, will challenge Faber for playing time. Aduama tied his career high with six saves against Hartford and saw some game time in the match against UNCW.
The two upperclassmen won't be without backup, however, as freshman Oliver Roberts, named the 2013 Goalie of the Year at Albertson Soccer Academy, along with classmateJonathan Thuresson, are looking to gain the opportunity for playing time.
