Northeastern swarms Maine in 4-0 road romp
ORONO, Maine -- The Northeastern women's soccer team was too much for Maine on Sunday in a 4-0 rout at Alumni Field. Sophomore Taylor Caparo scored her first collegiate goal just 16 seconds into the match and the Huskies never looked back in a dominant performance on the road.
Senior Lahaina Zoller, sophomore Mackenzie Dowd and sophomore Haley Sinclair also scored for the Huskies (3-2-1), while freshman Hannah Lopiccolo had two assists. Northeastern outshot Maine (1-5-0) by a 22-5 margin and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Paige Burnett posted her fourth shutout of the season (and 18th of her career) with two saves.
The Huskies went to work right off the opening tap. Senior Maria Lanyi played a deep ball directly into the right corner for freshman Kayla Cappuzzo, who beat a defender and crossed the ball in front. Sophomore Kimberly Slade met the pass with a header that was stopped by Maine keeper Elise Applegate. The rebound fell on the goal line where a Maine defender attempted to clear it, but the ball ricocheted off Caparo and into the net for the eventual game-winner just 16 seconds into the game.
Northeastern added to its lead in the 41st minute when Lopiccolo ripped a shot from outside the box that Applegate spilled onto the foot of Zoller for the rebound goal at the right of the cage.
The Huskies attacked out of the gate in the second half and came close to making it 3-0 when a header by Dowd was cleared off the line by a Maine defender in the opening minutes of the frame. Dowd had the final word, however, as the sophomore scored her second career goal 20 minutes later, toepoking home a header from freshman Carly Wilhelmat the left of the net. Lopiccolo was credited with the secondary assist after delivering a perfect ball to the back post off a corner kick.
Northeastern added a fourth goal on some pretty passing in the 80th minute. Wilhelm started the play with a cross from the right wing that senior Amy Steele headed on target from a sharp angle at the left of the net. Applegate could only tip the shot in the air, and freshman Nicole Wilkins, crashing the net at the back post, sent the ball back across the box to Sinclair, who chested it home for her first goal of the season.
Wilkins nearly scored her first collegiate goal minutes later, but her drive from 30 yards out dipped off the crossbar and bounced over the cage.
The Huskies return home on Thursday, Sept. 11 to face in-state rival Massachusetts at Parsons Field at 6 p.m.
