Northeastern women's soccer ties Maine, 1-1
BOSTON – The Northeastern women’s soccer team battled through its fourth overtime game of the season as the Huskies and Maine settled for a 1-1 draw at Parsons Field Friday night.
Northeastern (0-5-3) trailed 1-0 late in regulation when it earned a corner kick in the 82nd minute. Senior captain Hanna Terry took the corner, and Morgan Hilby headed home her first goal of the season to knot the game, 1-1.
NU goalkeeper Paige Burnett made a spectacular breakaway save with less than one minute remaining in regulation, bringing the Huskies to their third overtime match in four games.
Northeastern opened the game with great offensive pressure and managed two shots, one by Terry and the other by Carina Deandreis, and a corner kick within the first three minutes of the game.
Terry’s best bid to score in the first half came in the 29th minute when Oksana Nicholls’ free kick found Terry in the 18-yard box, but the senior captain’s shot went just wide of the net.
The Black Bears (3-2-3) nearly claimed a 1-0 lead in the first half when Charlene Achille intercepted a pass at midfield and attempted to put a shot over the head of Burnett, but the Colonial Athletic Association’s leader in saves punched the shot over the net to keep the teams knotted in a scoreless tie entering the break.
Jordan Pellerin gave Maine a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Nikki Misener broke free on the left side and found Pellerin in front of the net, just beyond the six-yard box.
Despite ending in a tie, Northeastern dominated key offensive categories. The Huskies held a 12-6 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Northeastern looks to maintain positive momentum when it travels to Massachusetts on Sunday, Sept. 22, for a 1 p.m. match with the Minutewomen.
