Northeastern women's soccer ties UNH, 1-1
DURHAM – The Northeastern women’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw after playing through two overtimes at New Hampshire Thursday night.
It marks the second double-overtime tie for NU (0-3-2) in its last three games. The Huskies played in only two overtime games all of last year.
New Hampshire (1-3-1) got on the board first with less than one minute remaining in the first half when Gabrielle Sloan came up with a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and drilled it into the bottom-left corner of the net to put the Wildcats ahead, 1-0.
The Huskies put four shots on goal in the first half, including two by Hanna Terry, but their 1-0 deficit at the break could have been worse.
The Wildcats threatened to score in the 19th minute when a shot attempt by Sloan banged off the right post.
The Huskies increased their offensive pressure in the second half by attempting nine shots in the period.
That pressure paid off when Krista Meaglia scored her first goal of the season in the 58th minute to knot the game, 1-1. Morgan Hilby assisted on the goal.
NU had a great opportunity to take the lead in the 76th minute when Terry drilled a shot off the cross bar.
The Huskies tallied a season-high 19 shots, nine of which were on net. Terry matched her season-high mark with seven shots.
Paige Burnett recorded a season-best 11 saves. Her season-best saves total has increased in each of the last three games.
The Huskies return home to Parsons Field Sunday, Sept. 8, for a non-conference matchup with No. 24 Ohio State. Northeastern will honor the late Jackie Spellman by retiring her No. 14 before the game.
