NU outmatched by BC in 2-1 loss
NEWTON, Mass. -- On a chilly, rainy afternoon, the Northeastern women's soccer team (4-2-0) suffered a 2-1 loss to the Boston College Eagles (4-2-0) at the Newton Soccer Field.
After an even first half that yielded no goals, the Eagles came out soaring in the second half. Goals from Sam Coffey and Jenna Bike came only 1:30 apart and quickly turned the tide of the game. Junior Hannah Rosenblatt netted NU's only goal with 10 seconds left on the clock, but it wasn't enough for the Huskies to come back.
Sophomore Kerri Zerfoss had a shot on goal for Northeastern in the first half that was one of NU's best chances of the game. She leapt into a cross from senior Hannah Lopiccolo and sent a strong header on goal, but it was kept out by BC's Alexis Bryant.
In the second half, the Huskies fought to find offense and ended up with three shots on net. Lopiccolo and junior Lizzie George had one shot each and were both denied. Rosenblatt had Northeastern's final shot of the game, the goal that made it 2-1.
Junior Nathalie Nidetch made six key saves for the Huskies that kept the game within reach.
Goal Recaps:
- The Eagles opened the scoring early in the second half. After a BC cross was intercepted by Lopiccolo, Coffey swiftly stole the ball from her and turned towards goal. She let a shot fly that Nidetch got a piece of, but it found the back of the net.
- Boston College wasted no time in doubling their lead. On their second consecutive corner, the ball landed in a mass of players with no room for the Huskies to clear. The ball dribbled loose to Bike who had a gaping net to shoot at. She tucked a shot home to give the Eagles the two-goal edge.
- With the Huskies pressing to get on the board in the final minute, BC's goalkeeper Alexis Bryant mishandled the ball in the box and Rosenblatt knocked it free. She had no one left in front of her and she buried it into the open net to give NU some life.
Northeastern will regroup and prepare for a trip to the Lone Star State as they take on Texas Christian on Friday and Texas on Sunday.
