NWSL prospects to watch at the College Cup
The College Cup caps off the 2015 women’s season this weekend in Cary, North Carolina. For a handful of players, it signals the end of their playing career, as seniors exhaust their eligibility at the NCAA level.
This weekend is a final chance for players to showcase themselves in front of NWSL teams. Keep an eye on the seniors below as a national champion gets crowned.
F Cheyna Williams, Florida State
Williams’ arrival at Florida State ahead of the 2014 season helped nudge the Seminoles over the hump at last year’s College Cup. Her numbers this season haven’t been gaudy (though she leads the team with 10 goals), but part of that is due to the team’s system, shuffling between Williams and Berglind Thorvaldsdottir up front. There’s no question that she is dynamic and athletic enough to play at the next level given the right opportunity.
D Brianne Reed, Rutgers
When considering Reed’s pro chances, look no further than the job she did last weekend in slowing down Makenzy Doniak and the rest of the vaunted Virginia attack. Reed’s athleticism and ability at the back make her a candidate to slot into defense when she hits the next level. A third matchup with Penn State is a prime chance to not only make it to a championship game but also showcase her next-level ability.
