NYU Men's Soccer Wins Thriller in Final Minutes of Overtime
October 16, 2011
Kyle Green’s goal with just 1:39 left in double overtime lifted the New York University men’s soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, October 16, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Colm Dillane played a corner kick into the box, where the 6-2 Green leapt and headed it in. Green’s game winner gave the Violets (6-5-1, 2-2) their second dramatic UAA double-overtime win of 2011.
“Great delivery by Colm, and Kyle rose to the occasion,” said NYU head coach Joe Behan. “What more can you ask for from your from your striker?
“These games get your heart rate going above normal,” added Behan. “That’s the kind of league that this is. The lads responded very well to the changes we made in overtime and played a lot better.”
Green also scored the Violets’ first goal in the 18th minute. He intercepted a bad back pass by the Maroon (5-6-2, 0-4) defense, drove into the box and buried a shot to give NYU an early 1-0 lead.
Chicago tied the score in the 82nd minute on a corner of its own. Sawyer Kisken played the corner into the box, where Stanton Coville headed it in.
The Maroons took all three shots in the first overtime period, including a dangerous blast on the ground by Coville that Violet goalkeeper Forrest Sexton dove to stop.
NYU, however, took control in the second overtime and finally broke through on Green’s header.
Sexton totaled a career-high seven saves between the pipes for the Violets, while the Maroons’ Elek Lane made one stop. For the game, Chicago held a 15-8 advantage in shots.
Prior to the game, NYU honored its two seniors, Adam Fein and Matt Newman, who played their final regular-season home game.
The Violets begin a five-game road swing on Wednesday, October 19, when they travel to Rowan University for a 7:00 pm contest in Glassboro, NJ.
