NYU Women's Soccer Win Streak Reaches Three
September 25, 2011
The New York University women’s soccer team completed an undefeated three-game road swing with a 3-1 victory at St. Joseph’s College-Long Island on Sunday afternoon, September 25, in Medford, NY.
Megan Young, Ashley McKenzie and Cami Crawford all found the back of the net for the Violets (6-2), who outshot the Golden Eagles (4-3-1) 25-4 for the game and held St. Joseph’s shotless in the second half.
“The girls did well to keep their focus and to keep attacking in the second half, especially after a long weekend with a lot of travel,” said NYU head coach Michele Canning.
Young netted NYU’s first goal just 3:29 into the contest, making a run down the left wing and burying a through ball from Leslie Smith.
The Golden Eagles scored the equalizer in the 16th minute off an indirect free kick in the box. Sarah Hansen played the free to Kaitlin Arthurs, who placed a shot into the top left corner.
Despite holding a 12-4 advantage in shots in the first period, the Violets entered halftime tied at 1-1. But NYU kept pressing in the second half, outshooting St. Joseph’s 13-0 for the period and finally going ahead on Ashley McKenzie’s goal in the 68th minute. Serra Tumay slid a ball through to a wide-open McKenzie in the box, and the junior finished for her second career goal.
Cami Crawford added an insurance goal in the 86th minute. After a cross into the box, Brianna Tumbiolo played a pass to Crawford, who buried a shot into the low right corner for her fourth goal of the season. Tumbiolo’s assist was her first career point.
The Violets return to action on Tuesday for their final non-conference tuneup before beginning University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The squad will host the College of Staten Island at Gaelic Park at 7:00 pm.
