Erin Ahmed’s goal with 6:32 left in regulation lifted the New York University women’s soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory at Brandeis University in its regular-season finale on Saturday, November 5, in Waltham, MA.

With the win, the Violets ended the regular season with a 12-6 record overall and a 3-4 mark in the ultracompetitive University Athletic Association (UAA). With nine points, NYU finished tied for fourth in the UAA – its highest finish since winning the UAA in 2002.

Ahmed scored the game-winning goal in the final minutes after winning a challenge in the midfield. She then dribbled towards goal and a took a long-range shot that went over the goalkeeper’s head and in.

Though the Violets took the lead late, they still needed one last defensive stand to hold off the Judges (6-11-2, 0-6-1). Brandeis produced four of its seven corner kicks in the final three minutes, with one forcing a tremendous save from goalkeeper Meg Patten.

After the corner was played into the box and bounced out, Alanna Torre gained possession and ripped a low shot to the near post that Patten dove and turned away.

“It’s really exciting to finish the regular season with a win on the road,” said NYU head coach Michele Canning. “The girls have worked hard over the course of the year and they earned it.”

Patten finished with seven saves in goal for the Violets, while Francine Kofinas and Michelle Savuto combined for seven for the Judges.

For the game, NYU held an 18-16 advantage in shots. Brandeis had the edge in corners, 7-3.
