ODU blanks NU, 1-0; Huskies earn No. 2 seed
NORFOLK, Va. – A goal from Ivan Militar in the 54th minute was all No. 24 Old Dominion (11-3-2, 5-3-2) needed to knock off No. 25 Northeastern men's soccer (11-2-4, 6-1-3) on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. The loss ends the Huskies' 12-game unbeaten streak, and positions NU in second place in the CAA standings.
Northeastern receives a bye into the CAA semifinals, which will be played next weekend at Drexel. The Huskies will play the winner of James Madison and George Mason, which play Monday in Williamsburg, Va. NU's No. 2 seed in the tournament is the team's highest since joining the league in 2005.
Senior goalkeeper Oliver Blum made a season-high seven saves for NU, which held its opponent to one goal or less for the 14th time this season.
The Monarchs held a 13-7 edge in shots for the match, eight of which were on goal. ODU also generated six corner opportunities to NU's six.
After playing a scoreless first half which saw ODU hold a 5-3 lead in shots, the Monarchs took a 1-0 lead on Militar's first goal of the season. With ODU on a fast break, Chris Harmon fed Militar with a pass on the right side, where he then fired a shot into the upper corner for the score.
Old Dominion would continue to press after the goal, throwing five more shots on Blum that the senior controlled to keep NU in the match. At the other end, Victor Francoz made two saves, including a late save on Terence Carter to preserve the shutout.
