ODU-Kentucky Tie 1-1
ODU AND KENTUCKY BATTLE TO A 1-1 TIE IN C-USA OPENER
LEXINGTON, KY – Old Dominion (4-3-1/0-0-1) and Kentucky (4-3-3/0-0-2) battled 110 minutes to a 1-1 tie Friday evening in a Conference USA match-up thanks to Monarch sophomore midfielder Cole Stringer’s second half goal.
“We didn't come out strong enough and conceded an early goal, but we responded well at half time and fought our way back into the game with a goal,” said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. “In overtime we ran out of energy and where satisfied with a hard earned point on the road.”
Kentucky took an early lead with less than five minutes into the match as Justin Laird scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Charlie Reymann.
20 minutes into the second half Christian Schroeer passed to Stringer who headed the ball over the Kentucky goalkeeper for the equalizer. The goal was Stringer’s first of the season and Schroeer’s team best second assist of the year.
UK outshot the Monarchs, 12-9 overall as ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen came up with seven saves on the night. The Wildcats goalkeeper Callum Irving made three saves.
The Monarchs return to action Wednesday night when they travel to Huntington, WV., to play at Marshall.
