ODU Ties Hartford in Opener
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women's soccer outshot Hartford 17-6, but the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie Friday night in the season opener at ODU Soccer Stadium.
The Lady Monarchs got on the board in the 25th minute as Lisa Bernardini sent a cross pass from the left side to Jocelyn Weidner to the far post, and Weidner headed the ball past the Hartford keeper.
Hartford got on the board in the 75th minute when Ameila Pereira sent a long pass down the right side to Arielle Aikens, who sent a shot from the right side into the net to knot the score at one.
The game remained tie heading into overtime, where ODU dominated, outshooting the Hawks 5-0, but unable to find the back of the night.
Rachael Carroll had the best chance of the second over time, as she corralled a clear by UH, dribbled down the right and fired a shot that Hartford keeper Erin Quinlan deflected off the cross bar, the far post and was then cleared out by the defense.
In the 50th minute ODU just missed a golden opportunity when Kate Kelly sent a pass to Bernardini, who fired a shot from 18 yards out that went off the cross bar.
Just three minutes later, the Hawks' Pereira fired a shot off the cross bar.
ODU finished the night with five corner kicks while the Hawks had one.
Bernardini had four shots for ODU while Meghan Cozens had three.
Brianna Alvarado made the only save of the night for ODU, while Quinlan had seven stops for Hartford.
ODU is back in action on Sunday when they host East Carolina at 2 p.m. at ODU Soccer Stadium.
