O'Kane's Return Sparks Scranton Past Eastern
HAVERFORD, Pa.—If veteran University of Scranton women’s soccer coach Colleen Pivirotto had any reservations entering today’s season opener against Eastern University at the Haverford Kick-Off Classic, they were quickly dismissed.
Senior forward Kelsy O’Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara), returning to the lineup after sitting out the 2013 season with an injury, scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and the Royal defense did not allow a shot attempt as Scranton cruised to a 6-0 victory.
The Royals extended their lead to 3-0 by intermission on a goal by sophomore Christina Akalski (Long Beach, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) on a play set up by sophomore midfielder Shannon McKenna (Islip, NY/Islip) and junior midfielder Sarah Andrews (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood), sophomore forward Kelsey Bacon (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), and freshman midfielder Samantha Wargo (Kings Park, NY/St. Anthony’s) chipped in a goal apiece in the final 45 minutes of action. Junior Gianna Vitolo (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and sophomore Caroline Slattery (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) each recorded an assist for Scranton, which held a 16-0 advantage in shots.
The Royals will meet Haverford College, which defeated Arcadia University, 1-0, in the other semifinal match today, Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. for the title.
