Old Dominion edged by Marshall, 1-0
NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 20 Old Dominion men's soccer team fell to Marshall, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the ODU Soccer Complex.
In a windy and rain-soaked contest, Marshall (7-8-1, 2-5-1) used a late goal to hand Old Dominion (8-4-3, 3-3-2) its fourth loss of the season. Trevor Starcher scored the matchwinner for the Thundering Herd, knocking in a loose ball off of a corner kick in the 82nd minute.
The scoreless opening half featured back-and-forth action, but neither team could find the back of the net. Marshall held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots in the first half.
In the second half, the rain picked up and so did the tempo of play. The teams combined for 21 shots in the second half, with the Monarchs tallying 13 of the 21.
The top chance for the Monarchs came in the 65th minute, when Ivan Militar ripped a shot that deflected off of the crossbar. Jesse Miralrio was there to gather the rebound, but his attempt was parried off the post. Just minutes later, Militar had a free kick from 20 yards out, but his shot was blocked by the Marshall wall.
Following the Herd's score in the 82nd minute, the Monarchs pushed numbers forward, but could not find the equalizer.
Overall, ODU outshot Marshall, 20-16, and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Alex Tiesenhausen recorded seven saves in net, tying his season-high. Miralrio led the Monarchs in shots with six, while Josue Henriquez added five.
