Onwuemeka Sends Panthers Home A Winner
DETROIT, Mich. - Lourdes Onwuemeka scored in the 57th minute to send the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Detroit Mercy Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.
The Panthers (11-1-0, 5-0-0 Horizon League) had to wait an extra day to knock off the Titans (3-7-3, 0-4-1 Horizon League) due to a weather postponement, but won for the 12th time in a row in the series and are now unbeaten in their past 20 Horizon League regular-season contests (18-0-2) as well.
"The team showed a lot of resiliency and maturity today," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "Detroit is always a difficult place to play and Mike (UDM coach Mike Lupenec) does a great job having his team prepared. I thought the team kept their focus through the rescheduling of the game and throughout the match."
Onwuemeka netted her third game-winner of the season following a scoreless first half, striking at the 56:34 mark, assisted by Kelli Swenson and Erin Corrigan.
"Lolo came through with a fantastic goal from Kelli and Erin," Fabiano said. "We had a lot of great contributions and our bench really gave us good energy."
The Panthers nearly doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, only to see Haley Johnson's possible tally hit the post and carom back on the field.
The defense was a big part of the decision today, holding the Titans to a single shot – a blocked attempt just 34 seconds after halftime – over the final 45 minutes to record the sixth shutout of the season for the squad.
Elaina LaMacchia needed to make just one save – coming in the 41st minute – to compile her fourth clean sheet of the campaign while lowering her goals-against average to 0.68 on the season.
For the game, the Panthers posted advantages of 8-to-3 in shots (3-1 in shots on goal) and 5-to-1 in corner kicks. Jelena Sever paced the offense with three shot attempts.
Up next, Milwaukee returns home to host Oakland Saturday. Game time against the Golden Grizzlies is set for 7 p.m.
