Orange Shut Out By Clemson
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s soccer squad had its five-game home unbeaten streak snapped in a 1-0 setback to Clemson on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange is now 4-1-1 on its home field this season.
The Tigers (6-2-2, 3-1) scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute after Katelyn Reeve served the ball into the box. Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel (East Meadow, N.Y.) and an Orange defender both tried to play the ball, which Kylie Tawney was able to flick into an open net. The SU offense earned three corner kicks in the first half, but could not convert on any of its opportunities.
The Orange (4-6-1, 0-4-1) was more dangerous in the second half. Its best scoring chance came in the 73rd minute when sophomore Erin Simon (Oakhurst, N.J.) crossed the ball to the right side of the box to junior Megan Hunsberger (Bethlehem, Pa.). Hunsberger tried to put her shot inside the far post but it went just wide. Syracuse successfully defended against four Clemson corners in the second half to keep within striking distance, but the Orange couldn’t record the equalizer.
“We went from playing a game that was organized and very disciplined on Sunday (against Duke) and last Thursday (against Notre Dame) to playing as individuals and not connecting passes and being disciplined,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We have to find some consistency, I thought, after putting in two very good performances last week, we had found our niche. I thought we had found our way to play.”
Clemson outshot Syracuse, 9-2, and recorded four corner kicks to three for the Orange. Anghel finished with five saves.
Syracuse plays its third consecutive home game on Sunday, Sept. 29 when it hosts No. 9 Wake Forest at noon at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
