Orediggers Falter Late, Lose 5-4 In Double Overtime At Fort Lewis
DURANGO – In line for the win with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Colorado School of Mines men's soccer suffered a numbing 5-4 double overtime loss to Fort Lewis Friday afternoon at Dirks Field in Durango.
Following back-to-back goals 31 seconds apart by the home team that evened the score at 3-3, senior Baski Baker put Mines (10-5-1, 8-5 RMAC) in front for the second time 48 seconds later with a six-yard header at 70:44 off a pass from junior Tannor Randle.
With 2:05 left in regulation, Fort Lewis (9-7-1, 6-7 RMAC) found the equalizer once more as Tamino Kroeger registered the team's second penalty conversion of the match.
The Skyhawks carried the momentum into the extra periods, outshooting Mines 8-0 with three shots on goal, including the deciding tally on a loose ball 4:14 into the second 10:00.
Led by senior Tesho Akindele with four and Baker with three, the Orediggers finished with their fourth-highest shots on goal percentage of the season (.600), placing nine of 15 tries on target.
Akindele reclaimed the conference lead in both goals and points, upping his season totals to 16 and 39, respectively, with his team-best fourth penalty kick goal at 27:01 and a lower, right-90 marker at 58:49 off a cross from Baker.
His third brace and fourth multi-goal game of 2013 moved him into a tie for 15th in goals (73) and 18th in points (177) in the Division II career chronicles, while Baker moved into sole possession of fifth place in program archives in points (85) with his three-point outing.
Sophomore Richard Garvey collected his third goal of the season less than a minute after the Skyhawks opening score at 15:26, putting a header on center net via the first of Randle's two assists and the first of his career.
The Orediggers, who remain in contention for the No. 2-No. 4 seeds in next week's RMAC Tournament, close out the regular season at 11 a.m. Sunday against Adams State at ASU Soccer Field in Alamosa.
