Oregon State Drops 1-0 Decision to Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Oregon State University men’s soccer team faced Colgate University this afternoon at Beyer-Small ’76 Field in Hamilton, N.Y., and dropped the match on a late goal for a 1-0 decision.
“It’s frustrating for the guys,” said head coach Steve Simmons, “because they created some good chances, including a goal that was called back.
In the end, we have to close out games. I know it and the guys know it. We’ll have our chance to respond on Tuesday.”
The Beavers (2-3) held the advantage in shots at 12-11, but the Raiders (3-2) opened up the floodgates in the second half with nine attempts coming in the frame, including five on goal.
Juniors Hassani Dotson (Federal Way, Wash.) and Matthias Binder (Bad Fischau, Austria) both fired off a trio of shots with two coming on goal, while senior Jaime Miralles (Vinaròs, Spain) ended with a pair of shots, both on target.
Redshirt-junior Ryan Vincent (Newberg, Ore.) took the decision with four saves in the net.
Colgate got the goal from Uyiosa Omorogbe in the 88th minute on a feed from Aram Ouligian for the difference in the contest. Peter Tappenden was credited with the win after making six saves in the box.
Six of Oregon State’s shots came in the opening half, but the Raiders needed only two saves from Tappenden to maintain the tie. Both of Colgate’s shots were off target in the frame but ended with an advantage on the corner kicks at 2-1.
The Beavers kept the pressure up in the second half, taking four shots to CU’s one by the 57th minute, but the Raiders turned the tide the rest of the way with eight shots to OSU’s two.
Omorogbe’s goal came after a slew of shots from Colgate, prompting three saves from Vincent in the process before getting the game-winner across the line with just under three minutes to play.
OSU will remain in New York over the weekend to take on [7/9] Syracuse on Tuesday, September 12. The contest against the Orange will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra/ESPN 3 with kickoff set for 4 p.m. PT.
