Oregon State Tops Cornell to Stay Perfect
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sophomore Timmy Mueller scored twice in a two-minute span to lift the No. 10/12 Oregon State men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Cornell Sunday morning at the Duquesne Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mueller’s goals came on a pair of headers in the 80th and 82nd minutes. The Post Falls, Idaho, native now has four goals this season, the most by any Beaver. Redshirt freshman CJ Brill assisted on both goals, recording the first points of his collegiate career.
With the win, the Beavers move to 5-0 on the season, the best start in school history.
“Cornell did a really good job of disrupting what we were trying to do, but we were resilient,” said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. “We were able to make some adjustments at halftime, and we played really well in the second half. We kept our head in the game and we created some good chances.”
Senior transfer goalkeeper Tyler Back made his Oregon State debut in the match, posting four saves en-route to the clean sheet.
Scoring chances proved hard to come by in the opening 45 minutes, as both back lines held firm. Oregon State’s best opportunity came in the 39th minute, when Mueller fired a shot on frame but the effort was saved.
Senior Jaime Velasco made a bid to break the deadlock early in the second half, forcing a save less than eight minutes into the closing frame. Velasco followed that up with another effort just five minutes later, but the shot was blocked.
Sophomore defender Jalen Markey came close to finding the breakthrough in the 73rd, but the Cornell goalkeeper again denied the Beavers. Fellow sophomore Graham Smith followed that up with a header on target five minutes later, but it was saved.
After spending 80 minutes looking for the matches’ first goal, the Beavers delivered two within a two minute span. Mueller’s first came off a cross from the left side, delivered by Brill. The forward struck again in the 82nd minute, hammering home a corner kick served into the box by Brill.
The Beavers will return to the state of Oregon this week, when they play at Portland on Thursday.
