OT Goal Hands Pitt 7th Straight Win
PITTSBURGH – Sophomore Taylor Pryce hammered home her own shot’s deflection with nine seconds left in overtime to lift Pitt (8-1-1, 2-0-0 ACC) over Wake Forest for its seventh straight win Thursday at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
“We got the ball on the break and [Taylor Pryce] didn’t connect on her first shot,” said head coach Greg Miller. “She persevered and ended up finishing it off. I’m very pleased with her and everybody, for that matter, because we just kept grinding to make it happen. This is the biggest win since I’ve been here. To get a win like this is very special.”
It’s been a season of firsts and bests for the Panthers, and tonight was no different.
The win extended the team’s current program-best win streak to seven, and matched the all-time wins mark in a season at eight. Pitt has recorded eight wins in a season three times before now, with the last coming in 2009. The Panthers are 5-0 on their home turf this year, the most home wins since 2010 (6).
Senior forward Roosa Arvas tallied an assist to give her 19 for her career. She eclipsed Katelyn Ruhe to become the program’s all-time leader in that category.
That assist came on the first score of the game, freshman Jarena Harmon’s sixth of the year, in the 67th minute. Harmon has notched a goal in both conference games so far as she continues her torrid rookie campaign.
The Deacs (4-4-2, 0-2-0 ACC) leveled the contest on a goal from Katie Dry in the 82nd minute, assisted by Sarah Medina.
After playing nearly a full period of overtime, Pryce broke away from the defense for a clean look at the goal – only to be turned away. With time winding down, she maintained her poise to collect the rebound and finished the goal with two defenders and the keeper close at hand.
Pitt will travel to Louisville for a 1 p.m. matchup this Sunday, Sept. 27, at Lynn Stadium.
