Otto Saves the Day, 2OT Win for Rangers
Lakewood, Colorado: Three of the past four games has required overtime for the Regis University Ranger women’s soccer team to find a way to win but they have done just that. The Rangers have extended their win streak to four wins as they found the game-winning goal late in the second overtime to defeat the Colorado Christian Cougars 1-0 on the road.
This was a game where the majority of play took place in the middle of the field with both teams vying for position in search of a goal. Play remained scoreless as the whistle would blow for halftime. The Rangers controlled the shot advantage, outshooting the Cougars 8-3 with three shots on frame.
In the final 15 minutes it appeared as if Christian was going to find the upset striking a ball just outside the stretch of Ranger goalkeeper Kat Crump (Huntsville, Alabama) but struck the cross bar to keep the game at an even 0-0.
As the match headed into overtime and the Rangers knowing the feeling all too well they knew giving enough for just one goal would give them the win. Each team had one shot throughout the first overtime period as the game moved into the final ten minutes of play.
The game looked as if it would end in a stalemate but then the Rangers earned one last chance when they were awarded a corner kick in the final seconds. Freshman defender Caelyn Hirschman (Bromsgrove, England) placed the ball and raised her arm for the final attempt of the game. Junior forward Sid Otto (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) became the hero scoring the game-winning goal from two yards out as time ran out to lift the Rangers to a 1-0 result. This goal was Otto’s sixth goal on the season and fourth game-winner. Crump played in all 109 minutes allowing no goals and making one save.
Regis moves to 11-3 overall and 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. RU hosts their senior day game at the Regis Match Pitch on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m. against the Adams State Grizzlies.
