Overtime Is Not Enough; Scots Draw A 1-1 Tie
NASHVILLE, Tenn -- The Covenant Scots and their counterpart Cumberland University spent most of the opening match of the Trevecca Nazarene Invitational trying to find the net. In the final 12 minutes of regulation, however, both teams netted a goal and after two overtime periods the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Covenant’s record goes to 0-2-1 on the season, while Cumberland goes to 1-2-1 for the year.
It took 78 minutes before Covenant scored the first goal of the match. Hudson Brock gave the Scots a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 78:13 mark, his first of the season and of his Covenant career, assisted from Gordon Carpenter.
Covenant kept Cumberland off the scoreboard and looked poised to come away with their first win of the year. The Eagles would not surrender and in the 89th minute scored the equalizer. Plinio Campos received a pass from Robert Als and found the back of the net to tie the match and send it into overtime.
In the overtime periods, both Cumberland and Covenant had chances to go ahead. Scots goalkeeper John Eger saved a Eric Clark shot in the 93rd minute and then Covenant’s Todd Fleming had his shot glance off the crossbar in the 94th minute. The second overtime period saw Covenant just miss on two opportunities as a Tyler Morrison shot was saved by Eagles goalkeeper Matthew Shattuck and Hunter Harrison’s shot just a few seconds later was again off the crossbar.
The Scots had several chances to gain an early advantage in the first period, but three shots from David Huertas and a shot from Ian Meredith were all saved by Shattuck in the first 45 minutes.
Covenant had more opportunities to score as they outshot the Eagles 19-13 and kept Cumberland keeper Shattuck busy all night long as he earned 7 saves. Eger had 2 saves of his own to keep the Scots in the match.
Covenant will play the host Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. to finish the invitational. The Scots will return home on September 17 when they host Guilford College.
