Panthers And Badgers End 0-0
MILWAUKEE - Freddy Lorenzen made five saves – including an incredible stop in the first overtime – to record his seventh shutout of the season as the Milwaukee men's soccer team played Wisconsin to a 0-0 draw Tuesday evening at Engelmann Stadium.
Both teams came in regionally-ranked, with the Panthers (8-5-3) now No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Great Lakes Region and the Badgers (7-4-4) No. 8 in the Midwest Region.
"We knew we had our hands full coming in," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "They are a good team and they are having a good season. I think the guys had a really good mentality, were prepared and I am pretty pleased with the performance tonight."
Each team had their opportunities, but 110 minutes wasn't enough for either side to find the back of the net in the state rivalry matchup, with UWM the first defense to hold the Badgers without a goal this season.
Once the game hit the end of regulation, the two squads combined for just three total shots in the extra 20 minutes. Lorenzen was the star of the show, making a diving save to punch Isaac Schlenker's game-winning attempt over the cross bar and save the day for Milwaukee in the 98th minute.
"We had some people that stepped up and made some plays," Kelderman said. "Freddy came up big on a couple of plays and had a very good performance tonight."
The second overtime was mostly uneventful as each team traded single shots over the net.
The Badgers were almost first on the scoreboard in the ninth minute after Alejandro Estrelles sent a shot just wide off a cross from Tom Barlow.
In the 27th minute, Jonathan Stadler fired a laser of a shot from well outside of the penalty box, but was saved by the Wisconsin goalkeeper. That shot began a string of four shots on goal by four different Panthers in a span of less than three minutes on the clock. Despite the cold night, all four shots were handled well by Wisconsin's Phillip Schilling.
"We got off to a good start," Kelderman said. "I thought the first half went well. I thought our possession was good, I thought we were strong defensively. We had a couple of good opportunities, just a little unfortunate to not score one."
The closest either team got to scoring in the first half was when Milwaukee's Reid Stevenson just missed a sliding attempt at an open net off of a cross from Nick Moon late in the 44th minute.
The Badgers put on more pressure in the second half starting with a shot on goal from Mike Catalano in the 70th minute after receiving a pass from Mark Segbers who weaved through three Milwaukee defensemen in the attacking zone. The Panthers answered with their own chance in the 78th minute when Nick Anguil-Andriacchi sent an attempt just wide of the net after a scramble following a free kick.
In the 81st minute, Wisconsin had another scoring opportunity after Lorenzen saved a header from Catalano off of a corner kick. The threat wasn't over, as Schlenker was there looking for a rebound attempt, but Lorenzen kept a firm grasp to end the scoring chance.
On the night, the Panthers led with 14 shots against the Badgers' 11 shots in the match. Wisconsin was awarded nine corner kicks opposed to four for Milwaukee.
Next up for the Panthers is a home match against IUPUI at Engelmann Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. It's the final regular-season home match for the Panthers, with "Senior Night" festivities scheduled for pregame.
