Panthers Battle Grizzlies To Scoreles Draw
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Freddy Lorenzen recorded his league-leading fifth shutout of the season to help the Milwaukee men's soccer team earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Oakland at OU Soccer Field Saturday evening.
The Panthers (8-6-2, 2-3-2 Horizon League) kept their postseason hopes alive with a draw against a Golden Grizzlies (7-7-3, 4-1-2 Horizon League) squad that came into play tonight alone in second place in the Horizon League standings.
A defensive battle all evening, the teams went into the half with just five total shots combined. The Panthers had three of them, starting quickly when Kasper Davidsson had an opportunity just 107 seconds into the match.
Lorenzen got MKE to the half without incident, making saves in the eighth and 38th minutes.
Late in the game, Milwaukee was the aggressor in the overtime periods, recording four of the six shots and the lone corner kick in extra time. Theo Campbell nearly played hero in the 106th minute, seeing his attempt at the golden goal get saved.
Lorenzen was called on one last time in the 100th minute, recording his final save of the evening to finish off his 18th career clean sheet.
Milwaukee concluded the contest with a shot advantage of 11-to-9, but were not able to get enough of its opportunities on frame. The Panthers came close a handful of times, including headers following corner kicks from Jake Kelderman and Vuk Latinovich in the 67th and 70th minutes.
The team also had seven of the 11 corner kicks on the evening. Latinovich led the way on offense with four shot attempts.
The final game of the regular season is up next, a home contest against first-place UIC Friday night. Milwaukee currently sits in seventh place, but at just one point out of sixth place and two out of fourth, anything can still happen in the finale.
Kickoff for the matchup, which is also "Senior Night", is set for 7 p.m. at Engelmann Stadium.
