Panthers Denied In Penalty-Kick Shootout

November 6, 2017

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee men's soccer team overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to force overtime before falling, 5-4, in a penalty-kick shootout against Detroit Mercy Monday night at Engelmann Stadium.

The Panthers (10-5-4) got goals from Nick Moon and Vuk Latinovich to draw even with the Titans (7-7-4) in the closely-contested Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal.

The overtime periods produced nothing of significance for either offense, with just one shot recorded – on a UWM free kick – in the 20 minutes beyond regulation.

The two teams traded successful makes in the shootout until round five. Robbie Beckwell came up with a big save for Detroit and Max Becker found the back of the net to send his team to the semifinals and end the season for the Panthers.

It was a night up fighting back for Milwaukee, which found itself down, 1-0, and 2-1, before clawing back each time.

UDM got on the board early, denting the scoreboard in the 14th minute on a free kick that hit the cross bar and came down, but found a way to cross the line to make it 1-0.

Outshot, 10-3, in the opening period, the Panthers had an answer. It was Nick Moon in the 27th minute, with an impressive ball-handling display through the Detroit back line after he was found nicely on a long ball from Magnus Flaatedal.

Moon did the rest, dancing his way around defenders before sneaking his sixth goal of the season inside the right post at the 26:45 mark.

The Titans went ahead again at the 52:00 mark, scoring off a free kick following a foul when Kyle Bandyk redirected a cross in front of goal for his first of the season.

UWM marched on and made it a new game again. This time is was Latinovich, who bent a free kick from just outside the box over the wall and into the corner for his third of the season at the 71:33 mark.

Shots finished in UDM's favor, 14-to-9, with corner kicks also its way at a small 5-to-3 edge. Latinovich paced the Panther offense with four shots.

In goal, Freddy Lorenzen was credited with three saves, while Beckwell finished with just one.
