Panthers Fall To Bruins, 2-1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sean Reynolds started the comeback with a goal in the 69th minute, but the Milwaukee men's soccer team was unable to find another in falling, 2-1, against Belmont Saturday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park.
The Panthers (2-3-2, 0-2-0 Horizon League) allowed an early goal to the Bruins (3-1-2, 1-1-0 Horizon League) and fell behind by a pair just after intermission. Reynolds goal turned the tide but Milwaukee could not ride the momentum to force overtime.
The Belmont defense held the UWM offense – which ranked first in the nation coming into play today with an average of 20.5 shots per game – to just eight on the day, including three in the first half and just three on target throughout the contest.
An early goal put the Panthers behind, with Belmont getting on the board just 6:08 into the day. Things stayed that way as both teams got comfortable on a hot day, with Freddy Lorenzen making a brilliant stop in the 28th minute to keep the deficit at one.
The contest went to halftime at 1-0, but Belmont was able to take advantage of a fortunate bounce to double-up the lead. Lorenzen made a stop just two minutes into the second, but could not control it. The rebound was put in and the lead was 2-0 at 47:17.
Milwaukee pushed forward and put up a trio of shots over the next 10 minutes. It was all Reynolds at the 68:54 mark, netting a free kick from the left side for his first of the season, but that was as close as UWM would get.
For the game, Belmont outshot Milwaukee 11-to-8, the first team to outshoot the Panthers this season. Each team earned three corner kicks and the Bruins were whistled for 19 of the 29 fouls.
Up next, the Panthers make the midweek drive to DeKalb, Ill., for the yearly LeWang Cup showdown with Northern Illinois. Game time Wednesday is set for 7 p.m.
