Panthers Keep Shutouts Rolling With 2-0 Win
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Mallory Geurts made three saves to help the Milwaukee women's soccer team equal a school record by posting its fourth shutout in a row to open the season in topping Eastern Illinois, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Geurts extends her personal scoreless streak to 370 minutes with the clean sheet, backed by a pair of first-half goals from Aubrey Krahn and Mackenzie Schill as the UWM Panthers (3-0-1) handed the EIU Panthers (2-1-1) their first loss of the season.
"The team did well to find a win on the road, overcoming some adversity with two senior captains picking up injuries," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "We are continuing to focus on improving the little things we need to sharpen up as the season progresses. We are excited to return home to Engelmann for our home opener against Western Illinois Friday night."
Krahn got hers early, one-touching a cross from Lourdes Onwuemeka and Anna Smalley into the back of the net at the 8:11 mark.
It was Smalley again making some noise in the 15th minute, only to see her attempt at her second goal of the season go off the post.
Milwaukee kept up the pressure and doubled its advantage near the half-hour mark. Schill was on the end of a set-up from Jen Eberhardy, heading the shot on target to make it 2-0 at the 30:44 mark.
The defense did the rest from there.
The team allowed just five total shots in the game, with two of the three second-half attempts coming in the game's final seven minutes. On offense, UWM dominated the day with a 14-to-5 advantage in shots and a 12-to-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Panthers wrap up the four-game road swing to open the season without a loss and without allowing a goal, matching the 2009 squad that also recorded four shutouts in a row to open the campaign.
Up next is the home opener, set for Friday night against Western Illinois. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the day is also annual "Fall Welcome Tailgate" for UWM students.
