Panthers Score Three First Half Goals, Defeat Elmira 4-1
The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s soccer team improved to 5-0 Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Elmira.
The game featured a total of 20 fouls and significant rain before the start of the match made for a slippery playing surface.
The Soaring Eagles scored less than two minutes into the contest on a corner kick. Mollie Hamilton knocked in a header off of Kelsey Kiel’s pass to stake Elmira to a 1-0 lead. Pitt-Bradford answered in the 17th minute when Lindsay Sherman scored her third goal of the season off a long pass from Yvonne Rohan. Sherman broke free from the back line and placed the ball in the far corner for the score.
Moments later, Vicky DeLong corralled a loose box just outside the box and fired a shot that went over the outstretched arm of the leaping Megan Lowe to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage. A foul in the box in the 25th minute set up a penalty kick for Pitt-Bradford. Lowe stopped Linsey Stack’s attempt, but Stack was there to collect the rebound and scored past the leaping Lowe to make it 3-1.
The score would remain that way late into the second half when Lowe misplayed a crossing pass, and Emma Roosa was able to steal the ball away and easily scored for her third tally of the season.
Elmira outshot the Panthers 14-13 and held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks. Pitt-Bradford goalkeeper Alisa Cornell recorded one save and the Panthers’ defense had several other key blocks throughout the game.
Pitt-Bradford will travel to Waynesburg on Tuesday for a 6:15 p.m. game.
