Panthers shutout Eastern Illinois 2-0
GREEN BAY, WIS - The Northern Iowa women's soccer team is participating in the Green Bay Tournament this weekend in Wisconsin. Their first matchup pitted them against the Eastern Illinois Panthers.
Coming off of two losses to start the season the Panthers were focused and ready to capture their first victory of the 2013 season.
UNI used an aggressive offense and sound defense to defeat EIU. Eight Panther's total recorded shots. Maddie Welch, Liz Frerichs, Larin Gordon, Annie Dale, Sarah McHugh, Brady Clark, Mary Brandt and Morgan Gallagher all contributed to the offensive attack.
Coach James Price's team totalled 11 shots while Eastern Illinois was only able to fire 4 shots, with only one being on goal. The aggressive offensive attack also provided the Panthers 10 corner kicks to EIU's one.
UNI's first goal would come on one of those corner kicks. During the 71st minute sophomore Midfielder Maggie Riley laced a corner kick in front of the goal and freshman defender Mary Brandt was there to head the ball into the net.
A short time later in the 81st minute freshman Amber Nieland attempted a put-back that found senior Morgan Gallagher's head for the second and final score of the match.
Senior Nicole Postel was between the posts for the entire 90 minutes for the Panthers. Turning away EIU's only shot on goal for the shutout and the win.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, September 1st at 11a.m. against Western Illinois.
