Panthers Soar Past Notre Dame
LYNDHURST, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team defeated Notre Dame (OH) Friday evening 2-1. The victory ended a 22 game Falcon winning streak, which had included 18 consecutive home wins.
With the win, the Panthers are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC play, while the Falcons suffered their first loss of the season, dropping their record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
ODU struck first as sophomore Jakob Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) recorded his first goal of his Panther career when he sent a header into the back of the net 12 yards out from a cross from the right side by senior Tyler Heurkamp (Loveland, Ohio) at the 42:31 mark.
Following the break, the Falcons scored after Christian Earnest connected off a Tom Owens pass to tie the game 1-1 in the 51st minute.
The Panthers responded at the 73:42 mark when senior Justin Wheeler (Gahanna, Ohio) sent the ball flying into the back of the net from 25 yards out after a goalie clear. It was his second goal of the season and 10th of his career.
The Falcons outshot the Panthers 26-11 for the game, but the Panthers edged Notre Dame in shots on goal 9-6. Junior goal keeper Dean Dziewit (Waterford, Mich.) picked up his second win of his young collegiate career, matching game-high saves with eight.
ODU continues on the road this Sunday, Sep. 16, playing a conference match against Lake Erie with a 4:00 p.m. start.
