Panthers Suffer Setback Against Wright State
MILWAUKEE – A decisive second-half goal turned the momentum and sent Wright State to a 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee men's soccer team Saturday night at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers (4-3, 1-1 Horizon League) had a pair of quality chances to equalize against the Raiders (4-2, 1-0 Horizon League) early in the second half, but a goal by the visitors just seconds after that opportunity sent WSU on its way to the win.
Vuk Latinovich netted a goal on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to make it 3-1, but that was as close as Milwaukee would get.
A fairly even contest at the break, the Panthers found themselves down 1-0 after a header from Stefan Rokvic in the 25th minute stood up as the only tally of the first half.
Milwaukee kept up the pressure in looking for the equalizer and nearly had it on a pair of occasions. Up first was Latinovich, who sent a rocket on goal from about 30 yards away just into the 56th minute. The WSU keeper made the impossible save, diving all-out to the post to push it away.
Two minutes later, an Evan Conway header off a corner kick from Tiahn Manual looked destined for the back of the net, only to go screaming just outside of the right post.
The ensuing possession was the game-changer, with Ids Hannema taking possession near midfield and dribbling all the way in to goal, scoring to make it 2-0 and turn the contest around.
Down 3-0, MKE looked to gain some life on a breakaway, with Alex Sykes finding Abdu Regassa alone in front. The Raider keeper came out at the same time, getting called for the foul that set up the Latinovich PK.
Wright State ended the night with advantages of 18-to-11 in shots and 7-to-4 in shots on goal. Milwaukee earned seven of the game's 11 corner kicks. The visitors also picked up both cards and were whistled for 25 of the 37 fouls.
Latinovich and Conway each had a team-best three shots for the Panthers.
Up next, another week, another Cup game, as the Panthers head to Northern Illinois Tuesday to battle the Huskies for the "LeWang Cup". Game time is set for 7 p.m.
