Panthers Win Big, Blank WJU 3-0
WHEELING, W. Va. – The Ohio Dominican women's soccer team kept the momentum going from its overtime win on Tuesday, blanking the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals 3-0 Friday evening.
The Panthers are currently 2-1-1 while the Cardinals fell to 1-2.
The Panthers wasted no time in getting their offense rolling, scoring in the 29th minute on an unassisted goal by junior Jordan Mazzi (Galena, Ohio).
WJU managed three shots in the first half, but the ODU defense did not allow the Cardinals to find the equalizer and held the 1-0 lead heading into the break.
At the 69:55 mark, sophomore Lauren Pratt (West Chester, Ohio) hit home her first goal of 2013, and ninth for her career.
ODU would score once more in the 74th minute on a freshman Madison Baldwin (Zanesville, Ohio) zinger to the back of the net.
Despite having opportunities, the Cardinals could not overcome the excellent ODU defense, which turned the tables each time the Cardinals threatened an attack.
For the game, the Panthers outshot the Cardinals 12-6 while WJU held a 9-2 advantage on shots on goal.
Junior goal keeper Laura Clark (Lapeer, Mich.) posted her first shutout of the season and improved her record to 2-1-1 while making two saves.
"Tonight was a tough match and a good learning experience," said head coach Jonathan Meade. "The team battled through and it was nice to be rewarded with three goals."
Ohio Dominican closes out nonconference play with a trip to Alderson Broaddus on Sunday, Sept. 15 for a 1 p.m. match.
