Parise Becomes Division II Shutout Leader
ALLENDALE, Mich. - A lone goal was all the Grand Valley State women's soccer team needed to help senior Chelsea Parise move into the top spot in the Division II record book in career shutouts with a 1-0 victory over visiting Ferris State on Wednesday evening at the GVSU Soccer Field.
The win improves the Lakers record to 4-0-1 heading into the opening weekend of GLIAC action. Ferris falls to 1-2-1 on the season.
Parise (Sterling Heights, Mich.) now holds the records for career shutouts with 47 in her four-year career. The senior keeper has only allowed 27 goals in 65 wins in that span.
The opening minutes saw an even control of the field as neither team could find a rhythm. Grand Valley State put the pressure on the Bulldogs, taking 10 shots and three corners in the first half.
In the 41st minute, senior Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) sent a long ball that found its way into the upper right 90, past a diving Ferris State keeper. The goal would turn out to be all the Lakers needed to secure the win.
The Bulldogs had their best chance with less than three minutes left in the first when Hillary Procunier sent a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but it was Parise who came out to grab the ball for her lone save of the game.
The next 45 minutes was a back and forth game, with the GVSU defense shutting down the Bulldogs' scoring opportunities. Ferris State was able to hold the Lakers scoreless as well and only allowed one corner in the second stanza.
For the game, GVSU held a 20-4 edge in shots, while taking four corner kicks to the Bulldogs' one. Ferris State keeper Rachel McCollum picked up five saves in the loss.
GVSU is back in action on Friday, Sept. 16 against Ashland at 7 p.m. in the GLIAC opener for both teams. Live stats and live video will be available at GVSULakers.com.
