Patriot Women fall to Eagles
FLORENCE, SC – Holly Talbut-Smith scored a goal and added a pair of first-half assists in a span of 10 minutes to lead Carson-Newman University to a 10-0 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 10) in women's soccer action.
Francis Marion (0-4-0) will hit the road to face Converse College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference tilt. FMU returns to Florence to open up Peach Belt Conference play against the University of Montevallo on Saturday (Sept. 17) at 1:30 p.m.
The victory pushes Carson-Newman’s record to 3-1 on the season. The Eagles tallied their first goal of the game at 15:17 to make it 1-0. A pair of goals in the 32nd-minute and 40th-minute by Lauren Wade and Julianne Herrity gave the Eagles a 3-0 advantage. Carson Newman held a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.
The Eagles outshot the Patriots 28-2 and led 5-0 in corner kicks.
FMU junior Haley Bigler and senior Tori Whigham registered the Patriot attempts.
Junior Casey Murakami made a career-high 10 saves in the goal for Francis Marion.
Jacqueline Burns earned the shutout in net for the Eagles. Burns made a pair of saves. Wade finished with a pair of goals and three assists, while Herrity recorded a hat-trick for Carson-Newman.
