Patriot Women kick road blues with 3-2 win at PC
CLINTON, SC – Francis Marion University sophomore Yasmin Bunter scored on a direct kick, 38 seconds after Presbyterian College had tied the score, and the Patriots went on to claim a 3-2 road win over the Blue Hose, Tuesday evening (Sept. 6) in women’s soccer action.
The victory evened Francis Marion’s record at 3-3-1 and equaled the team’s win total for the entire 2010 season. The win also snapped a 16-match road winless streak that dated back to a 3-0 victory at Eastern Kentucky University on Oct. 11, 2009.
FMU freshman Brittany Smith took a pass from Bunter and scored from the left side at 9:55 to give the Patriots a 1-0 advantage. It was her first career goal.
Presbyterian (0-4-0) tied the score at 1-1 at 36:40 when Rebecca Miller scored on a long 23-yard strike. However, it took only 38 seconds for Francis Marion to regain the lead. Bunter’s direct kick from 19 yards out deflected off the crossbar and in.
Junior Kelly Kady upped the FMU margin to 3-1 when she tapped in a ball in the 52nd minute. Freshman forward Elizabeth Asare began the scoring sequence by playing the ball into the box where it bounced around until controlled by Kady.
The Blue Hose closed the margin to 3-2 with 3:53 remaining when Gracie Boswell scored on a double assist from Sara Simpson and Jessica Kramer. FMU then held Presbyterian without another attempt as the clock ran out.
Francis Marion outshot Presbyterian 20-14, while both teams earned four corner kicks. FMU senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock made two saves as only four of the Blue Hose’s shots were on goal. Sara Beth Anderson registered five saves for Presbyterian.
Asare led FMU with six shots, including four on goal, while several other Patriot attempts found the woodwork. The Patriots extend their lead in the all-time series with Presbyterian to 11-6-0.
Francis Marion will play at Wofford College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
