Patriots blanked by Bulldogs 1-0
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate University sophomore forward Peron Da Silva scored on a header in the 59th minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday night (Sept. 1) in men’s non-conference action at the WU Soccer Complex.
FMU drops to 0-2, while Wingate improves to 2-0. The Patriots will visit Newberry College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
On the match-winning play, junior midfielder Gui Andrade took a free kick from 40 yards out. His boot found Da Silva, who converted the header from 10 yards away.
Wingate led in shots 15-8 and in corner kicks 8-1. Henrique Guitti and Tyler Norris led the Patriots with two shots apiece. Guitti hit the post with one attempt in the 38th minute.
Francis Marion freshman goalkeeper Taylor King registered four saves, while Bulldog sophomore Sanjit Kang pitched his first shutout with two saves.
