Patriots blanked by Pirates 6-0
FLORENCE, SC – East Carolina University scored five second-half goals to pull away from Francis Marion University for a 6-0 non-conference win on Monday night (Sept. 1) in women’s soccer action. The start of the match was delayed for an hour and 35 minutes due to lightning.
Francis Marion drops to 0-3-0, while East Carolina (3-1-0) earned its third straight road victory. FMU will play host to East Tennessee State University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
ECU took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore defender Autumn Berry curled her corner kick into the Patriot goal at the 6:29 mark.
FMU junior defender Kylie Allen nearly tied the score in the 28th minute, but her header on a Sandy Odembo corner kick was stopped by ECU junior goalkeeper Saundra Baron. The closely-fought first half ended with the 1-0 margin.
Baron came up with a spectacular save at the 48:46 mark to deny FMU sophomore Tori Whigham of a tying score. Patriot senior Elizabeth Asare took a feed from Chanel Harris on the right side of the penalty area and crossed the ball along the 6-yard box, but Whigham’s one-touch shot was blocked by Baron as she dove to her left.
East Carolina earned a penalty kick at 52:35, but Francis Marion junior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry stopped Stephanie Seagrave’s attempt to keep the score 1-0.
ECU’s Lana Spitler doubled the margin to 2-0 when she scored on a 17-yard shot from the top of the box in the 60th minute. Five minutes later, Brittany Fary found the back of the net off an assist from Kelsey Reeves to up the tally to 3-0.
The Pirates added scores in the 71st, 76th, and 80th minutes.
East Carolina outshot Francis Marion 14-8 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. O’Berry registered four saves, while Baron made five stops and her replacement Erika Lenns one save.
